皆さん、こんにちは。
新しくPORTER’S PAINTSチームに加わったEmmy(エミ) van Gemertです。
今回は、自己紹介を兼ねて、オランダ南部の田舎町にある私の”想い出深い実家”を紹介します。
日本との文化の違いなども、感じてもらえると思います。
今から26年前、私の両親は二人の兄とお腹にいた私を連れて1938年に建てられた今の実家に引越し、その年に私は生まれました。当時の実家は、写真に写ってるリビングと今のキッチンスペースが半分弱、2階のバスルームの2部屋しかありませんでした。その後、住みながら2階の寝室を増やしたり、ちょっとしたサンルームとお父さんの趣味に欠かせないカーポート等を加えてどんどん大きくなりました。私が小さい頃撮った写真の背景に写っている内装も、今は全く違うものです。リビングのフローリングやエントランスのカーペット、キッチンの壁に張ってある木材のパネル等、全部両親の拘りと共に何回もリニューアルされています。年月と共に両親の拘りと内装のスタイルも変化しています。
特に記憶に残っているのは、自分の手で木材パネルやドアのペイントのメンテナンスをしているお父さんの姿です。お父さんは日曜大工が好きなのですが、実はオランダでは自分の家の壁を自分で塗ることが一般的です。よくケチだと言われるオランダ人の節約方法の一つでもあって、自分の手で塗ることによってその家は実に「マイホーム」と感じられる場所になります。
26年間、私たち家族が住み続けた家ですが、常にケアをしてきた両親も六十代後半になり、子供たちがいなくなったこの家は大きい過ぎるため、再び他の家族に渡すことにしました。売るという決断が出たとき以来、お母さんは何回も涙を流したそうです。
オランダは自宅出産が多く、私が生まれた場所は実家の2階にある両親の寝室です。私は、家族の誰よりもこの家との繋がりが深いかもしれません。今、日本に住んでいて、もしかしたらもうこの家に足を踏む入れることはないかもしれないと考えたら、すごく寂しくなります。皆さまは、家にどんな想いをお持ちでしょうか。お会いしたら、ぜひお話しを聞かせてください。Emmy(エミ)でした。
Hello everyone,
My name is Emmy. I have newly joined the PORTER’S PAINTS team. Today I would like to introduce my parents’ home back in the rural town where I was born, located in the south of the Netherlands.
My parents and two older brothers moved to this house (which was built in 1938) 26 years ago, the same year I was born. At that time, the house consisted of the living room, a part of the kitchen you can see on the photos, and the bathroom and two bedrooms upstairs. Since then, my parents have added bedrooms, a sun room and a big garage which became my dad’s hobby space. The house became bigger and bigger. The interior you can see in the background of photos taken during my childhood is completely different from today. The wooden floor in the living room, the carpet in the entrance hall, the wooden panels attached to the kitchen walls, everything has been redone multiple times according to my parents’ wishes and tastes which changed over the years, so the interior’s style is all over the place.
A particularly lingering memory is that of my dad re-painting the wooden panels and doors of the first floor. There’s the fact that he’s a hobbyist, but painting your own walls by yourself is completely normal in the Netherlands. It’s one of the ways the pesky Dutch save money, but it’s also a way to create a sense of belonging in one’s own home.
If you’re wondering how I got my hands on good-looking photos like this, it’s because my parents have decided that, after 26 years, the time has come to pass this house on to another family. They both realized that for my dad, who is in his late sixties now, the house has become too big to maintain. It appears that since they made the decision, my mom cried several times.
Now that I’m living in Japan, the realization that I might never set foot in this house again came hard for me, too. Home births are normal in the Netherlands, and my parents’ bedroom in this very house is the place where I was born. As such, I might be the family member with the deepest connection to this house.
